Cycling Tips – Where to Ride

If you're just starting out with cycling, it's important to find the right places to ride that will be safe, enjoyable, and help you build your confidence on the bike. For your first bike ride, a great place to build your confidence is a traffic-free trail or park or right in your neighborhood. If you haven’t ridden in a long time, make a goal to cover around five miles and then build up your distance, so that you don’t overdo it. Little and often is the best way to increase strength and confidence.

Here are a few options to consider:

  • Bike Paths: Bike paths are a great option for new riders as they are typically paved, flat, and separate from motor vehicle traffic. Many cities and towns have bike paths that wind through parks, along rivers, or through other scenic areas. Look for bike paths that are well-maintained and have minimal elevation changes.

  • Rails-to-Trails: Rails-to-Trails are a great option for beginner riders. These are old railway lines that have been converted into trails for cycling and walking. They are often flat and well-maintained, and they offer a peaceful and scenic ride away from traffic.

  • Local Bike Groups: Joining a local bike group can be a great way to find new routes and get to know other cyclists. Many groups have regular rides that are specifically designed for beginner riders, and the group leaders can provide tips and advice on how to ride safely and confidently.

  • Your Neighborhood: If you're not quite ready to venture too far from home, start by riding in your own neighborhood. This will allow you to get familiar with the roads and traffic patterns, and will give you a good sense of your own abilities and limits.

  • Map it out: It’s great to head out on the open road or trail and see where the day takes you, but it’s also rewarding to have a ride challenge set out in advance. Online mapping will help you plan out an awesome route for the ride ahead (or find your way back home once you’re lost in the wilds). Our ride maps and cycling area guide videos should also help.

When you're just starting out, it's important to find routes that are relatively flat, with minimal traffic, and that are well-maintained. This will help you build your confidence and improve your skills as a rider. It's also important to take your time and progress at a comfortable pace. Remember, cycling is supposed to be fun, so don't push yourself too hard and enjoy the ride.
